Abstract

The growing need to harness under utilised plant as alternative for the production vegetable oil with less competitiveness for consumption has become necessary. Merremia hederacea is a plant with oil rich seed. This study determined the physicochemical properties of M. hederacea seed oil. 500 g of pulverised M. hederacea seed was extracted with petroleum ether. The extract obtained was subjected to column fractionation. The physicochemical properties of the oil from the n-hexane fraction were determined using standard analytical methods. The percentage oil yield was 36 %. The specific gravity, viscosity, density, moisture, saponification, iodine and peroxide values were 0.87, 4.70, 0.87, 0.02, 198.74, 133.52 and 6.50 respectively. While the refractive index, flash, pour, cloud points and cetane number recorded were 1.50, 76.50, 12.50, 17.00 and 43.73 respectively. The physicochemical properties M. hederacea oil has revealed, the seed oil is a good edible oil having a range of acceptable physicochemical parameters in relation to health and safety. This oil could also have industrial applications in oil paint and ink production, cosmetic industry, biodiesel production and oil-based ice cream in food industry.
