Abstract
This study examined the effects of seasonal flooding on human health in Ganaja, Kogi State Nigeria. The research aimed to identify major health challenges associated with flooding and assess community awareness and coping mechanisms. A survey design was employed using structured questionnaires administered to 200 residents who had lived in the area for at least five years. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, means, and weighted mean analysis. Findings revealed that 86% of respondents become aware of flooding through personal experience, while 33% attributed its cause to the overflow of nearby water bodies. Typhoid fever (74%) malaria (47%), and injuries (66%) were reported as the most severe health impacts during flood events, whereas cholera (49%), skin infections (42%), and flu (43%) were moderately severe. Hepatitis was largely reported (80%) as not severe. The study concludes that flooding poses significant public health risks in Ganaja and recommends the development of effective drainage systems and strengthened public health awareness programs to reduce flood-related diseases.
