Abstract
Road traffic accidents constitute a significant public health issue in Nigeria, causing substantial morbidity and mortality This study aims to investigate the specific factors contributing to road accidents in Niger State, Nigeria, Methods adopted was the selection of major trunk’ A’ routes were; Minna-Suleja (approximately 105 kilometers), Minna-Bida (approximately 89 kilometers), and Minna-Kontagora (approximately 190 kilometers). Ninety-nine (99) trained research assistants were deployed along the 3 major routes with varied numbers of questionnaires, to conduct random vehicle inspections, and road Infrastructures. The distributions of the questionnaires show that; Minna-Suleja (approximately 105 kilometers) had 27 questionnaires, Minna-Bida (approximately 89 kilometers), had 23 questionnaires and Minna-Kontagora (approximately 190 kilometers) had 49 questionnaires. A total of Ninety-seven (97) questionnaires was returned and computed. The analysis shows, a significant portion of the pavement (49.48%) was classified as fair, while 16.49% was in poor condition. This indicates a substantial need for road repair and maintenance. 40.41% of the pavement exhibited potholes, and 52.56% had severe edge damage. These issues pose significant safety risks for road users. (42.27%) had poor drainage, and 75.26% of the materials were assessed as fair or poor quality. These factors can accelerate road deterioration, while, 65.67% of respondents reported good or excellent speed compliance, a significant 43.30% perceived police enforcement as ineffective. This suggests a need for strict enforcement and public awareness campaigns. The study recommends, invest in the construction and maintenance of high-quality roads with adequate drainage, signage, and markings., Strengthen law enforcement efforts to effectively control traffic violations, particularly speeding and reckless driving, implement effective traffic management systems to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, and enact and enforce strict regulations for vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness.
