Abstract
Syrups are concentrated sugar solutions formulated as liquid oral dosages, primarily used as therapeutic or prophylactic agents for children and the elderly. This study aimed at assessing the microbiological quality of four selected syrups (Vitamin C, Paracetamol, Cough, and Multi-vitamin) purchased from three different registered pharmaceutical stores in Minna metropolis. The samples were analysed using the spread plate method, and the data obtained were subjected to one-way analysis of variance. Results revealed that the mean total viable bacterial counts, coliform counts, and fungal counts for all syrup samples ranged from 2.25×10² to 1.275×10³ CFU/mL, 2.1×10² to 1.45×10² CFU/mL, and 1.0×10¹ to 4.0×10¹ CFU/mL, respectively. The microbial counts in most of the analysed syrup samples were within the permissible limit set by the United States Pharmacopeia (≤102 CFU/mL). The organisms isolated include Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium notatum, Trichophyton megninii, and Mucor pusillus. Bacillus subtilis were the predominant bacterial isolate, while Aspergillus niger was the predominant fungal isolate. However, the presence of microbial pathogens in some of these syrups poses a potential public health risk. Although most syrups met the specification limits, stringent safety measures should be implemented during production to ensure complete compliance to standard and product safety.
