Abstract
Catch assessment and frame survey of Tagwai and Lapai - Agaie Reservoirs, Niger State, Nigeria were carried out between July 2024 and September, 2024. Six (6) families that included Clariidae, Mochokidae, Mormyridae, Alestidae, Cichlidae and Claroteidae were reported in the reservoirs. However, eleven (11) and twelve (12) species in Tagwai and Lapai-Agaie reservoirs respectively. Cichlidae had highest species (4) and Coptidon zillii recorded as the most abundant in both reservoirs. Monthly fish composition and abundance in Tagwai reservoir revealed 9 species as highest in August and C. zillii as dominant species throughout the months. 10 species each was recorded in September as highest in Lapai-Agaie reservoir with Oreochromis niloticus, Mormyrus rume and Coptidon zillii recorded as most abundant in July, August and September respectively. Gillnet, cast net and Malian trap (gura) were recorded in both reservoirs as fishing gears while plank canoes and paddles served as crafts with higher number of canoes from Tagwai reservoir. The findings of this study can be used as baseline information for research in other water bodies as well as serve as guide for the management plans of these water bodies.
